I'm a soccer referee, and I'll admit that head protection is a smart move for youth players. However, the way to getting the gear approved for your child has absolutely nothing to do with your child's coach. As long as you aren't doing anything that will get the coach in trouble, s/he has NO authority over how you choose to protect your child (headgear, kneepads, wrist guards, whatever). Your child is YOUR child and you can protect your child how you see fit, the coach cannot prevent you from doing so. If you really want your child to wear the protective gear, and the association which governs the league your child plays in has not expressly forbidden it, then buy it! Here'e the tricky part... the center referee in each and every game your child plays has the right and the authority to refuse to allow your child to play if wearing the gear. Your child will have to show the gear to the center referee for every single game and ask if it will be allowed. Whatever decision the referee makes will be the final answer for that game. Good luck, and happy soccering
